A Sign of Endearment

September 16, 2008

Bismillah walhamdulillah, was salaatu was salaamu ‘alaa Rasoolillah.

Nicknames.

They’re funny, sappy or corny, interesting and even secret.

But did you know this is a sunnah? It is! There are many instances from the seerah where the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam personally gave a nickname to a companion. InshaAllah i’m going to post my favorite one, but I would like anyone who happens to read this to try and find one themselves and write it in the comments section.

What is so special about nicknames, you’re wondering? Firstly, it increases the love between you and the person, as per the title: a sign of endearment. Also it makes your ties of ukhuwwa (brotherhood/sisterhood) much stronger. It is a sign of love for your fellow Muslim (of course the same gender, unless they’re mahram) to give them nicknames, not to mention it’s fun!

So which is my favorite?

Who else🙂 ?

Narrated A’ishah radi Allahu anha: One day, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, “O `Aa’ish! Here is Jibril, conveying salaam [greetings of peace] to you.” I replied, “Wa `alayhi al-salaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh [And upon him be peace, Allah’s Mercy and blessings]. You (i.e. the Messenger of Allah) see what I don’t see.” (Bukhari, hadeeth no. 3484)

Allahumma sali wa sallim ‘alaa Nabbiyyina Muhammad, O Allah, send Your peace and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad. He called his wife radi Allahu anha with a shortened form of her name (from A’ishah to A’ish), and when this is done in Arabic it is to display affection.

So go ahead, give that special person a nickname! InshaAllah you will get the reward for fulfilling a sunnah, and the friendship between you will also increase.

Please comment with some more examples! (cite the source please)

wa lillahil hamd!
