Bismillah

The word Rahmah (Mercy) has many connotations in the Qur’an and is used to describe many things. As mentioned in the previous post, two of Allah ta’ala Name’s come from rahmah, showing how Merciful He really is.

Rahmah in the Qur’an

  • Creation of mankind is Rahmah (55:1-3)
  • The knowledge of Qur’an is His Great Mercy, expression of His Kindness if He gives this knowledge to someone. (55:1-2) He taught the Qur’an, so if someone gets the knowledge of Qur’an, it is Allah’s Rahmah.
  • The revelation of the Qur’an (16:89) wa hudan, wa rahmatan, wa bushraa lil muslimeen, the Qur’an is a guidance, a mercy and glad tidings to the Muslims. Rahmatamir Rabbik, a mercy from your Rabb.
  • Rain: huwal lathee yursilu riyaaha bushran bayna yaday rahmati, He is the One who sends the winds as a herald of glad tidings before His Mercy.
  • Knowledge of the deen. In surah Kahf, Allah says about Khidr: aataynaahu rahmatan min indinaa, We gave him Mercy from near Us. In particular it can mean prophethood, because in Al-e-Imran and Baqarah Allah ta’ala says: yakhtasu birahmatihi man yashaa, He chooses for His Mercy whom He wills.
  • General blessings: forgiveness, general good.
  • Jannah is Rahmah. Allah says about the believers in Al-e-Imran: fa fee rahmatillah. They will be in the Mercy of Allah. In a Hadeeth Qudsi in Bukhari, Allah will say to Jannah: anta rahmatee, you are My Mercy, I will be merciful with you to whomever I want from My servants.(So Allah said to paradise, ‘You are My Mercy,’ and said to Hell, ‘You are My Punishment which I inflict upon whom I wish, and I shall fill both of you.'”)

Can anyone think of more examples?
