Respond to that which gives you life
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اسْتَجِيبُوا لِلَّهِ وَلِلرَّسُولِ إِذَا دَعَاكُمْ لِمَا يُحْيِيكُم
O you who have believed, respond to Allah and His Messenger when they call you to that which gives you life. (8:24)
Allah ta’ala begins this beautiful ayah by addressing the believers, those who claim emaan. This is an important address as ibn Abbass radi Allahu anhuma said, listen attentively when Allah says “ya ayuhal latheena aamanoo” because after it will be a command of Allah, that will direct us towards some good or protect us from harm.
So let’s listen closely, Allah tells us: respond to Allah and His messenger. What is ‘istajeeboo’ (to respond)? It is to positively respond, and in this context, it means to follow and obey.
When do we listen closely? ‘Itha da’aakum lima yuhyeekum’, when he (the Prophet) calls you to what will give you life. Yuhyee means to give life to something or someone. What Allah and the Prophet sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam call too gives life to the hearts. They call to emaan and the Qur’an. The Qur’an gives life and light to heart, it is called a basaa’ir, an enlightenment. When there is light, we see reality as it truly is. The Qur’an reforms us. It gives peace and contentment to the hearts. Allah ta’ala says in An’aam 122: wa ja’lnaa nooran, Allah gives the example of someone who was given light and he walks among the people and one who is in darknesses–this is the example of Qur’an, that gives us light, security and peace in our hearts. The Qur’an and emaan give us life of the heart in this world and in the eternal life of the hereafter. So respond to Allah and His Messenger, by following their commands.
Have you responded? Have you found life?
